In a game-changing move, businessman Frank Lao has unveiled the latest addition to the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) – Strong Group Athletics (SGA). As the savior of Gerflor, Lao has consistently demonstrated commitment to Philippine sports, extending the Strong Group brand to the volleyball arena. This strategic decision comes hot on the heels of Lao’s generosity in addressing Gerflor’s financial challenges. SGA is the sister team of Farm Fresh, another venture owned by Lao, and its establishment marks a significant step in expanding opportunities for Filipino volleyball talent.
Lao, renowned for his ownership of Converge FiberXers in the PBA, expresses excitement about contributing to the growth of volleyball by providing additional platforms for athletes and coaches. The move aligns with Lao’s vision of nurturing local talent and elevating the sport’s status in the country.
Former Gerflor head coach Sammy Acaylar is in anticipation of Lao’s decision regarding his potential role in leading the new squad. Acaylar’s willingness to respect management’s choice reflects a harmonious approach to the team’s evolution.
The Strong Group Athletics roster remains undisclosed, creating an air of anticipation among fans and competitors alike. The strategic signing of NBA champion Dwight Howard and former Gilas Pilipinas mainstay Andray Blatche by the Strong Group basketball team has already generated significant buzz, further elevating the brand’s profile.

In parallel, Farm Fresh Foxies, under Lao’s ownership, is making strategic moves to fortify its roster. Recent acquisitions include spikers Jolina dela Cruz, Chinnie Arroyo, and Elaine Kasilag, adding depth and experience to the team. Middle blocker Jaycel delos Reyes, formerly with Chery Tiggo, contributes further to the Foxies’ formidable lineup.
The infusion of talent also extends to former University of Santo Tomas standouts, libero Janel Delerio, and outside hitter Ypril Tapia. This influx of skilled players complements the existing core, including team captain Louie Romero, Kate Santiago, Sofia Ildefonso, Alyssa Bertolano, and the dynamic Trisha Tubu. The team has set its sights on an improved performance in the upcoming season after finishing 13th in its debut Invitational Conference and securing the 10th spot in the All-Filipino Conference.
As the PVL landscape evolves with Frank Lao’s strategic initiatives, the Filipino volleyball community anticipates an era of growth and heightened competition. SGA and Farm Fresh Foxies, under Lao’s stewardship, signify a promising future for the sport, emphasizing inclusivity, talent development, and a commitment to excellence.
