In a remarkable display of resilience and determination, the San Beda Lions clinched the NCAA 2023 Champions title, marking an extraordinary journey through trials and triumphs. Jacob Cortez, despite not bagging any individual awards, cherished the championship victory as the ultimate reward for their team’s season-long efforts.

Coach Yuri Escueta acknowledged the team’s relentless hard work since January, emphasizing their unwavering spirit in overcoming adversities to secure the coveted championship. San Beda’s path to victory was far from straightforward, facing initial struggles in the first round but showcasing an impressive resurgence in the second round.

Their resilience was put to the test in the Final Four against the Lyceum Pirates, where they emerged triumphant despite facing a win-twice disadvantage. This set the stage for a highly anticipated best-of-three showdown against the heavily favored Mapua Cardinals.

Amid a roaring crowd of 23,077 fans at the Smart Araneta Coliseum,San Beda, propelled by Yukien Andrada’s pivotal 20-point performance, sealed the championship with a resounding victory over Mapua. James Payosing’s consistent contributions throughout the series culminated in his last-minute heroics, earning him the Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.

Expressing humility, Payosing acknowledged the championship’s significance over individual accolades, crediting their team’s unity and collective effort. His acknowledgment of Cortez’s season-long brilliance underscored the camaraderie and mutual respect within the team.

Despite Mapua’s valiant efforts, their storyline mirrored previous encounters, faltering in crucial moments despite promising performances. San Beda’s strategic and resilient gameplay eventually outshone the Cardinals’ efforts, securing San Beda’s 23rd NCAA crown overall.

The championship victory stands as a testament to the Lions’ resilience, unity, and unyielding determination, marking an exceptional journey culminating in the NCAA 2023 Champions title.
